The sum of all cash inflows to the business, plus the cash that was in the farm bank account at the beginning of the year, should equal the sum of all the cash outflows, including the balance in the farm account at the end of the year. This is a good way of checking to see if all the cash received and used during the year has been accurately recorded.

These are the cost of land improvements that should be capitalized as part of land. A major land improvement is a substantial and reasonably permanent
improvement in the qualities of the land affecting a given use. A large non-recurrent
input is required, usually taking the form of capital expenditure on structure and
equipment. Once accomplished, maintenance of the improvement remains as a continuing cost,
but the land itself is more suitable for the use than formerly. Examples are large

Adam Smith, moral philosopher and early classical economist, has become the well-known icon of this transition. Arsenic build-up in top soil has been reported in rice growing areas of Bangladesh due to excessive use of water from arsenic-contaminated aquifers (Molden, 2007). Similarly, poor water control in traditional canal-based surface irrigation systems often leads to excessive application in the head-reaches at the cost of users at the tail end. Tillage is the most prevalent of these activities as it is used extensively throughout crop production.

Tiffen et al. (1994) provided an excellent case study from the Machakos District of Kenya on the process of intensification and farmer investment in land improvements. Conversely, if an asset cannot even generate sufficient cash to cover its own book value, it has become a detriment to the owner. Book value is compared to present fair value, the amount for which the asset could be sold. For property and equipment, the lower of these two figures is then reported on the balance sheet.

What Does Land Improvement Mean?

The cropping systems of rice (Oryza sativa) are at the greatest risk in south and southeast Asia. The balance sheet can be constructed using a ‘cost’ approach, which generally values assets by using the original purchase price or the depreciated value, or using a ‘market’ approach under which assets are valued at their expected market price, if sold. The cost approach is generally the more conservative of the two methods, but market values are more useful for comparing the farm’s financial condition with that of other farms. Scarcity in most cases is economic, i.e., other users are able to divert water away from agriculture by paying more.

Because of this problem of interaction, it is
recommended that the comparison of land with land use should be carried out in terms of
land qualities. Where it is wished to relate
agricultural land utilization types to a general classification, the Typology of World
Agriculture of the International Geographical Union may be considered (Kostrowicki, 1974). The role of land utilization types in land evaluation is discussed further in Beek (1975). This recoverability test indicates whether a problem exists that is so significant that immediate recognition is warranted. It is so they can depreciate only the building element and not the land itself.

Financial Accounting
